At the Virginia Safari Park, one day simply isn’t enough. Each year, we celebrate World Rhino Week with seven days dedicated to these incredible animals and to helping protect their future.
From Sunday, September 20 through Saturday, September 26, you’ll have the rare opportunity to go behind the scenes at our Rhino Complex for an unforgettable encounter with our southern white rhino herd.
Go Behind the Scenes
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to stand just feet away from a southern white rhino? To offer one a treat, feel its surprisingly unique skin, or snap a photo with a rhino beside you?
During this special 30-minute behind-the-scenes experience, an animal care specialist will take you beyond the areas normally visited by Safari Park guests and introduce you to up to five members of our rhino herd.
You’ll tour the Rhino Complex, see the specialized crates used to safely transport these massive animals, and discover what goes into caring for rhinos every day. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to ask questions, feed the rhinos treats, enjoy touch time with a rhino and capture photos from an experience you won’t soon forget.
And you’ll take home something no ordinary gift shop can offer: a painting created by our rhinos.

An Unforgettable Encounter With a Bigger Purpose
Getting closer to rhinos is only part of what makes World Rhino Week special.
During your encounter, you’ll learn more about southern white rhinos, what it takes to care for these remarkable animals, the challenges rhinos face in the wild, and why their conservation matters.
Best of all, your visit helps rhinos beyond the Virginia Safari Park. A portion of all World Rhino Week encounter proceeds will be donated to rhino conservation, helping support efforts to protect rhinos in the wild.

Tour participants will meet at the Safari Trading Post Gift Shop and be transported to the Rhino Complex for their behind-the-scenes experience.
