It was more than business as usual for Virginia Safari Park on November 23, 2012. The day marked the 11th annual “Coats for Kids” charity, in which Virginia Safari Park opened its gates and donated their entire day’s proceeds to purchase new winter coats for children in need in the Rockbridge County area. “Coats for Kids” occurs each year on the Friday after Thanksgiving at the Park.
“This charity continues to grow,” said Eric Mogensen, CEO of Virginia Safari Park. “One day really can make a big difference in our area, and, of course spending a day at the Safari Park is just a fun way to get involved.”
Each elementary school compiled a list by size and gender for the children in need of winter coats. The new coats were purchased, wrapped and delivered by the Safari Staff to each school by December 14th, just before Christmas break.
The event was a great success this year, leading to the delivery of over 180 coats to Rockbridge area school children on December 14, 2012. Burlington Coat Factory in Roanoke, VA was very generous and helpful, providing great service and supplying a large number of coats in various sizes for the staff to purchase. Virginia Safari Park would like to give thanks to the strong community support and the generous donations that helped make the 11th annual Coats for Kids event a success!
